Amazon, the e-commerce giant known for its innovative delivery solutions, has launched a testing program for futuristic drone package delivery in Texas and California. This ambitious project has been years in the making as Amazon has faced a number of technical and regulatory challenges along the way.
Amazon’s history of delivering packages is extensive, beginning with their mail-order catalogs back in 1994. Since then, they’ve gone on to introduce their own shipping services like Prime Air and Fulfillment by Amazon that offer quick and efficient deliveries to customers around the world. With drone package delivery, Amazon seeks to revolutionize delivery yet again by providing customers with even faster access to their products.
To make this dream possible, Amazon had to overcome various technical difficulties such as designing drones that can navigate through difficult terrains while also accounting for safety features like avoiding obstacles and navigating around people or animals present in its path.
The VP of Prime Air Amazon, David Carbon chimed in on this in a LinkedIn post. He also posted a pic of the drone that was dropping a box at one of the test locations. This is cool stuff.
I’m sure that some of the things they have to overcome are avoiding objects and obstacles, weather conditions, how to avoid dropping a package and yes, people shooting at drones.
